We started a group to study "chabana". Chabana is literally tea flowers, and is a general word for the arrangement of flowers for tea ceremony.
Each members have different professions and practice different school of tea. We had fun arranging tea flowers in our own way. Some of them were teachers of tea ceremony or sencha tea ceremony. It was a great opportunity to interact with people from different schools of tea.
The location was at Shoden Eigen-in, a subsidiary temple of Kennin-ji Temple in Kyoto. The temple is associated with Oda Urakusai, the tea master and younger brother of Oda Nobunaga. There is also a tea room that is a replica of 如庵"Joan". The original tea house of 如庵 "Joan" is the national treasure tea room in Nagoya constructed by Oda Urakusai.
For this tea ceremony flower study session, we had picked flowers that were blooming in the temple grounds. We are very grateful to the head priest of Shoden Eigen-in. Thank you very much.
I have studied the Urasenke tea ceremony for 15 years, but this was my first time to really look at chabana, flowers for tea ceremony. Through this study session, my interest in chabana has deepened.I'm thinking of starting by growing flowers for the tea ceremony in our gallery.
We photographed this photo of the purple orchid flowers in the special tea house, Joan at the temple.
I would like to learn more about tea flowers little by little and enjoy arranging them.
It's of the subject, but since I don't often go out to town, I walked through the downtown of Kyoto city on my way home. I was surprised to see that the riverside seating had been set up on the Kamo River for summer season. The summer has come already! The photo shows a Chinese restaurant on Shijo Ohashi Bridge.
